The way to Anchorpoint 2.0

Why we slowed down feature development to work on what matters most.

Hello eveyone,

We have been quiet about updates for a while. The reason is that we have been working on something else, which we call Anchorpoint 2.0. It will define the future of our product.

How it started

Anchorpoint 1.0 launched over four years ago. We built it as a pipeline tool for motion graphics projects, the field I came from after spending a few years as a UX designer and 3D artist at Maxon.

Anchorpoint 1.0 then evolved into a version control solution for real-time projects, mostly in game development and visualization. When we started, Git was supposed to be just a plugin. Now it has become the core of our product.

With this transformation, our product grew, became more complex and built up technical debt. This is now a major problem for things like performance and UX. Features or improvements that look trivial often require heavy development effort and compromises. Even AI does not help here.

What is happening right now

Last Monday, we released Anchorpoint for Lore, a desktop client for Epic Games' new version control solution. We built this application on a completely new tech stack, and it is fast. That's not because of Lore. It's because of its new architecture, for example how it stores metadata and thumbnails. Everything that feels slow in Anchorpoint right now feels instant here.

It will be the foundation of the new Anchorpoint. Alongside Lore support, we have also built support for Git, and we plan to release that version in the coming month. That is the new Anchorpoint 2.0: a fast, visual version control solution that works with both Git and Lore.

When will it arrive?

Anchorpoint 2.0 will be released in several steps:

  1. Anchorpoint for Lore, released on Monday
  2. Anchorpoint for Lore gets full Git support and becomes the Anchorpoint 2.0 alpha
  3. We add the CLI, API and metadata management from Anchorpoint 1.0 to Anchorpoint 2.0

We expect to deliver the full-featured Anchorpoint 2.0 in the first half of 2027.

Do I need to do anything?

Anchorpoint 2.0 uses a different metadata architecture, so it also needs a different metadata server. Because of that, an auto-update won't work. You will need to install Anchorpoint 2.0 as a separate application.

After Anchorpoint 2.0 launches, we will keep both applications running side by side. You don't have to switch.

If you want to move to Anchorpoint 2.0, we will work out a migration plan with you. Your Git repositories stay unchanged either way.

Thank you for being with us! We continue to provide you the most visual and open collaboration tooling for the age of AI.
